There is increasing attention for healthy food, but also for food that suits you as a person. People make choices based on allergies or intolerances, but sometimes also consciously choose based on religious beliefs or because they want to eat vegan or vegetarian. It is sometimes said that you are what you eat. It is good to make conscious choices, also when it comes to your exercise routine and diet.

Below you can see which supplements you can take to supplement your diet. The handy selection aid options help you make the right choice.

Vegetarian diet

More and more people are eating less or no meat. If you do not eat meat, it is very important to take other products that contain iron, protein and vitamins B1 and B12. The latter only occurs in animal products. That is why vegetarians are wise to take vitamin B12 supplements.

Vegan

Vegans do not eat animal products at all. That means no fish, meat, dairy or eggs. Then it is very important to pay attention to nutrients that you would normally consume with these products. Think of iron, proteins, calcium, important vitamins such as B1, B2 and B12, iodine and omega-3 fatty acids. With a healthy plant-based diet, you choose nuts, legumes and whole grains from which you can get proteins and iron, for example, and vegetables and fruit. Dairy alternatives include tofu, tempeh, kernels and seeds and vegetable fats and oils.

Lactose intolerance

If you suffer from lactose intolerance, this can complicate your daily life and exercise routines. First let me explain what it is. Lactose is a sugar found in milk (products) and is digested by the enzyme lactase, which is produced in the small intestine. If too little is produced, the lactose from food cannot be digested properly, causing it to end up in the large intestine. Bacteria in the large intestine ferment the lactose, causing complaints.

Celiac disease intolerance (Gluten-free)

People with celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten. Gluten is a mixture of proteins that occurs naturally in certain grains. Eating gluten mainly causes inflammatory reactions in the mucous membrane of the small intestine. But the disease can manifest itself anywhere in the body, such as the skin, joints and brain. Gluten is found in many products. View here which products you can and cannot eat.

Halal

Halal food consists of food that is considered clean in Islam. For example, meat from animals slaughtered according to Islamic laws has a halal quality mark. But which nutritional supplements are halal? Minerals and vitamins may be made from products of animal origin, such as fatty acids or proteins. Alcohol may also be involved in the preparation process. With capsules you must make sure that they are not made of gelatin, but are made of plant fibers (cellulose). Always look for the Halal quality mark for nutritional supplements.
